County Program: Citrus About: I have competed in basketball, volleyball, skiing, soccer, golf, bowling, softball, and swimming and have been a golf and basketball coach. I have been a Special Olympics Athlete since 1996, and my mother is the one who helped me to get involved. The highlight of my experience has been meeting new athletes from all over the United States, playing soccer in the National Games in 2006, being chosen for the ALPs program, and being able to attend the Athlete Congress. I am a leader by being a representative for the County Management Team. I have used my leadership and communication skills by volunteering at Castle Hill Elementary School. I work with 3-5 year-old special needs children, help students in 3rd grade with their reading, and work in the book fairs and in the front office. At the Athlete Congress I hope to promote a healthier diet for athletes, and use achievement for advancement for higher rankings in games. I believe the Athlete Congress is important because it gives a voice to communicate to others what Special Olympics athletes need and feel is important. At the Athlete Congress, I am looking forward to learning new leadership and speaking skills, meeting all the other members and learning from them, and discussing the issues that are important to the Special Olympics Athletes. |
